Opening of
B.P. Jain Hospital
Sri Sankara Health Center OP Clinic continued to operate as a outpatient facility with very limited patients beds from a shed build on the land where the new building was to come up. In order to facilitate the construction, Sri. S. Viswanathan offered his house in Pammal and iy is from here that the Health Center continued to operate from 1998 until the new 30-bed Hospital building was ready for occupation in 2001. The construction of the new building costing Rs. 50 lakhs had its share of challenges. With Nethralaya moving out unexpectedly and our having to return their security deposit, the project faced difficulty. At this stage Sri Visvanathan suggested that we name the Hospital after the donor who donates at least 50% of the cost. Rtn BP Jain came forward and donated the amount, thus the Hospital was named as BP Jain Hospital. The new Hospital was dedicated to the public by HH Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal on Sunday, 10" June, 2001. The Chief Guest on the occasion was Sri NK Jain, Chief Justice of Madras High Court accompanied by Justice Sri Balasubramanian and Rotarian Governor.
From this point onwards the Hospital was able to provide a much needed Outpatient as well as In patient healthcare at an affordable cost and with the blessings of the Acharyas, it continued to grow in stature and today we Hospital that handles an average Outpatient footfall of close to 400 every day. The Hospital has carried out 5859 surgeries and delivered 1805 babies! Since commencement the Hospital has handled 1.7 million outpatients and over 36000 inpatients. Our OP Consultation charges over the years moved up from Rs 1 in 1983 to Rs 50 at presentwhichis still lower than any other Hospital in the area.
The
FIRST
Step
As the Chinese proverb goes,"A Journey of a 1000 miles begins with a Single Step", we at Pammal Sankara Group took this first step on 12-December-1984 when we set up a small Outpatient clinic under Sri Sankara Health Centre, a Society registered in September, 1984. Looking back to that time makes even some of us who have been part of this journey from inception wonder how we actually managed to negotiate the twists and turns, and how we held on to our faith that we will do what is really needed in the community. It all started because of sheer necessity. In 1983, Pammal was a sleepy suburb with no healthcare facilities or access to schools. His Holiness, Jagadguru Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal, Sankaracharya of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam had been exhorting everyone to work towards promoting three important pillars of Sanathana Dharma - Veda, Vidya, and Vaidya. Towards Vidya and Vaidya, HH advised Establishing educational facilities and providing affordable healthcare, In Pammal, we had a Sathsangam which had been functioning since 1968 providing a forum for promoting religious and cultural activities, Dr Venkatasubramanian (Dr VVSasheis fondly remembered to this day) was the President of the Sathsangam. When His Holiness visited Pammal in 1983, DR VVS and the members of the Sathsangam requested HH to bless our endeavour to setup a School. On His directions, Sri Sankara Vidyalaya was started as a Primary school in the Sathsangam buildingin 1983. At this time, the nearest Hospital available was in Pallavaram and in the absence of public transport, access for anyone needing hospitalization after evening was only by the few horse drawn carts available in the area, Many atime, the cart man had to be woken up from his drunken stupor and fetched from his house. Dr VVS and a few like minded persons decided to bring about a change and after setting up the school ,the next step was taken by setting up an evening clinic in the Pamma Satsangham building. This was also in line with the directions of HH towards Vaidya
Dr V Venkatasubramanian The pioneering figure whose vision led to the setting uand growth of all the Pammal Sankara Institutions. We salute the self effacing personality who was a giant among men! He was the President and | or Founder Trustee of all the Institutions listed below and remained sountil his demise on 30th December 2005:
- 1967 - Sri Sathsangam ( Social & Religious Acitivties)
- 1975 - Sri Sankara Vidyalaya, Tambaram
- 1983 - Sri Sankara Vidyalaya, Pammal, (3000 Students)
- 1984 - Sri Sankara Health Centre (Bifurcated into Sankara Eye Hospital and BP Jain Hospital)
- 1891 - Sri Sankara Educational Trust (Four Sri Sankara Vidyalayas in Tambaram, Puducherry, Kodaikanal & Urapakkam)
- 2004 - Sankara Eye Hospital, Pammal (2.66 lakhs surgeries)
- 2004 - Sankara Health, Education & Charitable Trust (BP Jain Hospital) - 16 Jakh patients benefitted (Dr.VVS)

Sri V. Lakshman is a founder Trustee of all the Pammal Sankara Group of Institutions including the Schools. A Successful Industrialist and businessman , he has brought in his considerable experience to bring about Quantum changes in Sri Sankara Vidyalaya, Pammal and Sankara Glopal Acadamy, Pammal where he is the Correspondent. In addition, his involvement has helped transform B. P. Jain Hospital, Pammal. He is a person for whome the word "No" is unknown and he firmly belives and aborts other to believe that 'Everything is Possible'
